The Best Present from a stranger, which has turned my life.
Travelling can often feel like a task, right? All that planning, packing, checking schedulesβit can get tiring, even boring at times. But what if, amidst all the hassle, you meet someone who turns the entire experience into a beautiful memory?
Let me share one such unexpected story with you.
Wrapped in Kindness: A Present from a Stranger
I boarded a train from Kazipet to Secunderabad on a pleasant evening, taking the journey for my motherβs fifth death anniversary. I was heading to Hyderabad to conduct the rituals and visit my dad. Adding to the mix, I also had an exam that week, so I planned to use the travel time for some last-minute preparation.
This wasn’t just any train ride, it was my first time in a chair car. Thatβs mostly because I never really showed much interest in train journeys and growing up in a middle-class Indian family, my father would always prefer the general compartment. You know how it isβthereβs always something to save for, whether itβs school fees, a festival coming up, or just those βwhat ifβ rainy days!
I felt a little excited to see the new traveling experience.
I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, and deep down, I simply hoped for a smooth journey.
Little did I know it would turn out to be so memorable.
The train picked up speed, and the city outside turned into fields and trees. Inside, the carriage felt calm. I could hear the low hum of people chatting and the soft rumble of the wheels on the tracks. There was that familiar train smellβslightly musty, a bit metallic, but strangely comforting.
Across the Aisle: A Stranger’s Gaze and a Silent Connection
As I have exams, I started reading my books. My complete focus was on the bookβbut only for a while. I couldnβt help but glance up when a middle-aged woman took slow, careful strides and settled into the seat in front of me. She looked a little tired, draped in a simple cotton saree that quietly reflected her modesty. Her handbag rested beside her, with a folded newspaper peeking out, hinting at a routine or maybe just a habit she carried with her.
But what stood out the most was her smileβwarm and comforting, the kind you often see on every mother. You know how they are, always thinking ahead, packing even the smallest essentials for their loved ones, especially if itβs been a while since theyβve seen them. That same gentle curiosity and quiet care reflected in her eyes. She reminded me of my mother.
She settled down and, without wasting a moment, quickly made a callβprobably to her loved onesβletting them know she had boarded the train safely. Isnβt it fascinating how we all do that? No matter where weβre going or how grown-up we are, thereβs always that instinct to share every little detail of our journey with the people who care about us. Itβs our way of saying, βIβm safe,β and silently hoping the rest of the journey stays that way too.
With a gentle reminder to myself about using the time wisely, I shifted my focus back to the book and continued reading.
At that time, I wasnβt a big fan of reading booksβbut with nothing else to do, I had no choice but to stick to what was in front of me. Still, somewhere in the quiet rhythm of the journey, I noticed something. The woman sitting across from me seemed a little curious, like she wanted to strike up a conversation. But she didnβt utter a word. I figured maybe she didnβt want to interrupt, seeing me buried in my studies.
Even so, I couldnβt help but glance at her now and thenβbecause she kept looking at me with that gentle curiosity. I began to wonderβ¦ was she trying to guess what I was reading? Or did she just want to talk? You know how it isβon long train journeys, people often open up and start conversations with strangers. Maybe she was just waiting for the right moment.
Itβs funny how easily strangers strike up conversations on trains. Maybe itβs the long hours, the shared space, or the simple fact that weβre all in motion, going somewhere, with stories waiting to be told. Often, it starts with a smile, a comment about the weather, or a question about where youβre headed. In my case, it began with a warm smile.
Finally, she began the conversation, and she shared that she travels to Hyderabad every weekend to visit her daughter, who works in the software industry. Her tone was kind and familiar, the kind that makes you feel instantly at easeβlike she truly enjoyed striking up conversations during her journeys.
When I mentioned that I had chosen teaching as my career, her face lit up with genuine delight. She nodded thoughtfully and said, βThese days, many youngsters chase after quick money. Everyone jumps into IT without giving it much thought.β Then, leaning in a little, she added with a touch of admiration, βBut teachingβteaching is different. Itβs a noble profession. You shape young minds, build the futureβand thatβs something truly meaningful.β
I was genuinely surprised by her wordsβit was the first time someone had ever spoken so kindly and appreciatively about the teaching profession. It meant a lot to me, because I wasnβt even a qualified teacher yet. I was just preparing for my exams back then. But honestly, her words sparked something in meβthey made me take this path more seriously and gave me a real sense of purpose.
A Gift That Stayed with Me Longer Than the Journey
In just a few moments, we were nearing our destination. She suddenly began gathering her things and, almost in a hurry, pulled out a book wrapped in newspaper. Handing it to me with a gentle smile, she said, βHereβs a small gift from me. I really enjoyed our conversation. This book was given to me by my niece, but I feel itβs meant for you. I think youβll connect with it more than I ever couldβitβs an interesting one.β
Before I could even fully react, she stepped off the train and disappeared into the crowd. I sat there, stunned, still processing what had just happened. A complete stranger had just gifted me a bookβan unexpected act of kindness that left a mark on my heart. I felt seen, appreciated, and understood in a way thatβs hard to put into words. It was one of those rare times when a brief interaction leaves a lasting imprint on your heart.
Do you know what I had received? A truly wonderful bookβMahashweta, written by Ms. Sudha Murthy. She is a renowned Indian author, philanthropist, and the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation. Her stories often reflect the values of simplicity, compassion, and real-life struggles, making them deeply relatable and inspiring.
I couldnβt stop reading Mahashweta. The story was strong and beautiful. It touched my heart right away.
Truly, I feel blessed to have experienced that moment. Itβs something that has stayed with me ever since. A simple gesture from a stranger turned an ordinary journey into a special memoryβone that still brings a smile to my face. And today, that little moment has become a story Iβm proud to share with you all here. Because for me, blogging is more than just writingβitβs a dream come true. A place where I can relive the moments that touched my heart and pass them on to yours.

Very inspiring message even a random act of kindness , no matter how small , can make a tremendous impact on someone else’s life . Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see . Kind hearts are the gardens , Kind thoughts are the roots , Kind words are the flowers , Kind deeds are the fruits . Never underestimate the power of a smile , a kind word , a listening ear , or a compliment . All have the potential to bring joy to others and make the world a bit brighter . A good head and good heart are always a formidable combination . But when you add to that a literate tongue or pen , then you have something very special . The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mole , but true beauty in a Woman is reflected in her soul . It is the caring that she lovingly gives , the passion that she knows . However no word can express the effort , dedication , and sacrifices a teacher put into teaching , Teaching is not only a profession , but it is a purpose of a great life . A great teacher not only teaches , but they also encourage and appreciate improvement . A good teachers is like the rising sun that comes to fill the empty and dark minds with the light of the education . The mediocre teacher tells . The good teacher explains . The superior teacher demonstrates . The great teacher inspires . I truly believe that the teaching profession contributes more to our society than any other single profession each one of us will have a teacher who has inspired us to become who we are today . Teachers mould the leaders of tomorrow and play a major role in shaping our society .
